My Globe Broadband Dilemma

Thursday, 5th November 2009

I consider September 26 as one of the most unforgetable days for me. It was the day Typhoon Ondoy hit Metro Manila. Our place doesn’t get flooded by typhoons usually but Ondoy did. Lots of things happened that day. Flood in the street was chest-deep while it was two feet deep inside our house. Cars and appliances were submerged.

This was also the day our globe broadband became unavailable. I think their box got submerged in the flood too so the telephone lines were not working. I was hoping that they can fix it within one week. A week passed by and still our phones have no dial tone. I called them using a globe cellphone (since we don’t have a phone line) and reported the problem. After several follow up calls, they told me that the target date for the repair was first week of november. I was so frustrated because my main source of income was my online work. If I can’t work online, then I will have no income. Since it’s not practical to pay for two lines, I only have two choices: to wait until it gets repaired or discontinue their service and avail the service of another provider.

Getting the service of another provider is a very convenient and a fast solution but according to the customer service representative of globe, I have to pay the pretermination fee since I am still in a 12-month lock in period. I asked how much was the pretermination fee and it’s almost Php10,000. I thought, “My gosh, I already lost my income for several days of no work and yet I will have to pay a large amount if I am going to discontinue their service”. In short, I decided to wait for their target date which is the first week of November. It was very inconvenient for me because I had to travel everyday just to use the internet connection in another place.

Now I am expecting globelines to resume their service since it’s already the first week of November. But to my dismay, we still don’t have a phone line. I called them twice this week (yesterday and today). They told me that our area is still undergoing system restoration and that the estimate date for the repair will be by second week of November (take note: the target date was moved from first week to second week).

Well, I hope that my lines will be really restored by next week…
